A few years ago, I had the chance to watch artist and illustrator Greg Manchess demonstrate the versatility of the palette knife. The way it creates edges and texture is so unlike what you can achieve with a brush. It takes courage, and incredible skill to wield with precision. I was reminded of it before starting this painting, and thought it would be a perfect opportunity to hone my skills. The backlit scene is full of the kinds of edges that a knife is perfectly suited for.
