This small plein air, which eventually became the basis for Stronghold, Buffam Falls captures everything I wanted to say about this place (which is unusual). I had been hiking and sketching for about an hour when I happened to step through the thin ice that covered a part of the Buffam river, right where it was about to meet Amethyst Brook. Luckily my boots were just tall enough that the water didn’t pour in, but when I stumbled back onto the bank, I looked up and saw a window of warm light shining through, illuminating the trees standing on the far bank. I made another sketch, but I knew this was going to be fun.
