After painting the first version of this on location, I knew I wanted to explore the subject more thoroughly, and a wide format seemed a perfect way to catch the spread of those first rays coming through the trees above me and splashing on the opposite banks. The contrast of warm light behind and the cool shadows in front are among my favorite compositional elements.
