Nothing compares to that first sight of a new painting location, one that I’ve since returned to many times. Located out in the middle of the woods of Northern Massachusetts, The Bear’s Den is a truly unique little waterfall. It splits around its iconic center boulder, often jammed with logs, and soon becomes a calm stream once more. I hiked all over the area, taking sketches (some of which eventually became other paintings), but I knew this one had to be the first. I eventually turned this smaller plein air painting into a larger studio work, but this one might still be my favorite.
